Our Story

From Uncertainty to Self-Reliance

“My name is Zaw Ye Naing. I’m 29 years old and hold a degree from Yangon University. When I first arrived here, my future felt uncertain. I didn’t know how I would earn a living or rebuild my life.”

Everything began to change when Zaw Ye Naing learned about the vocational training opportunities provided by ADRA. “I found out that ADRA offered skill-based training and supported those with motivation and ambition through start-up grants. That gave me hope.”

He enrolled in a cooking course and, midway through the training, began experimenting with simple, low-cost recipes that had the potential to generate income. “I focused on snacks like hot dogs, which didn’t require a microwave and were easy to prepare. I practiced regularly, refined my skills, and developed a unique presentation style that differed from what I was originally taught.”

Upon completing the course, Zaw Ye Naing was selected as a qualified grant recipient and went on to establish a home-based hot dog business. Soon, he created a small brand, packaged his products to attract customers, and expanded his menu to include fish and potato chips—especially useful when hot dog sales dropped during the rainy season. “During my free time, I also drive a motorcycle taxi to supplement my income. It’s been five months since I received the grant, and I can now say I’m self-reliant.”

His dedication has not gone unnoticed. “People have started to recognize me because of my business. On average, I earn between 200 to 400 baht per day. My long-term goal is to expand into making sauces, chili paste, and other dry goods to eventually export overseas.”

He sources ingredients both locally and online, sometimes even from Myanmar. His sales strategy includes roadside selling and delivery services. While challenges like flooding and supply shortages remain, his spirit stays strong. “To keep the momentum, I give free samples for people to try and ask satisfied customers to recommend my products to others.”

For others considering the same path, he offers this advice: “If you’re planning to apply for a grant, make sure you learn how to manage your finances well. Understanding how to track your costs and profits is essential for running a successful business.”
