The Statelessness Reduction and Community Sensitization Project (CSP)
The Statelessness Reduction and Community Sensitization Project
(CSP) was initiated in response to the recognition that a large portion of the Thai community lack legal nationality and the rights that come with it. With the majority of those impacted coming from the hill tribe communities in northern Thailand who despite having been born or having lived in Thailand for generations are considered as stateless. While the accurate population of stateless persons is not certain, as of June 2024, there are 592,340 stateless persons reported by the Royal Thai Government and registered with the national civil registration system. The government of Thailand in recognizing statelessness as a humanitarian concern has made commitments to address this and reduce this by streamlining nationality application processes, reducing applications times which accelerates the pathway to citizenship.
ADRAs’ efforts contribute to the commitment made by the Royal Thai Government by working at the community level providing training, conducting community outreach through its paralegals at dedicated service points where the community can seek assistance. The project furthermore works closely with government departments and civil society organisations supporting individuals with the applications process for birth registration, nationality, and permanent residency.
ADRA is part of the Global Alliance to End Statelessness and is committed to contributing to solutions that bring an end to statelessness. To this end, ADRA is part of the Statelessness and Dignified Citizenship Coalition – Asia Pacific (SDCC-AP) a regional body that brings together civil society and individuals in solidarity to catalyse regional action to address statelessness and promote equal nationality and dignified citizenship.
